A Sense of Place: Year 2
September 2009 - June 2010

Ruth Ewan was invited to work with Chisenhale Gallery on Year 2 of its A Sense of Place programme. Working collaboratively with the Year 8 students in each of the three schools (Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate School, St. Pauls Way Trust School and Langdon Park School) Ewan explored the past and present struggles of Tower Hamlets; this research included investigating The Battle of Cable Street, the politian George Landsbury, visionary architect Cedric Price, the Suffragettes and The Match Girls Strike.

Year 2 culminated in a celebration for the schools at Chisenhale Gallery where their work was exhibitied in the gallery and they swapped badges made by Ewan in response to her time spent at each school.

Stemming from the residency Ewan presented Dreadnoughts a series of guided walking tours around East London led by invited specialists. To see more information about this click here.

Chisenhale Gallery has received an investment from Deutsche Bank and Arts & Business to develop their education programme. The Arts & Business Investment Programme is funded by Arts Council England.
