Enquire
September 2008 - March 2009
Continuing our work with Enquire to research the role galleries play in young people’s learning this year Chisenhale and the rest of the East London Cluster will focus on investigating different models to implement the new 14-19 Creative and Media Diploma for schools and colleges working with galleries.

For the past 2 year Chisenhale has been part of the East London Cluster, led by Whitechapel Gallery, for the enquire project. Last year Chisenhale’s involvement in enquire took the form of four projects with one Year Ten class at Lister Community School, Newham:

Phase I & II artist Anthony Lam developed a project that explored contemporary art practice as a means to enable young people to become individual learners in the GCSE classroom. The young people looked at slogans, self portraits and public art to explore how to develop their own ideas.

Phase III, Satellite Project ‘Telling the Others’: artist Eve Peasnall worked with a group of four girls from the Year 10 group who participated in Phase I & II to explore ‘intervention’ as a means to shift the meanings contained within the site of their school. This project culminated in a giant intervention in the school playground.

Phase IV, Extension Project: artist Eve Peasnall worked with the whole Year 10 group during their GCSE Art Class for eight weeks concentrating on the development of workable models for integrating contemporary practice into GCSE Art.

Run by engage (the national association for gallery education) en-quire has been exploring, assessing and articulating the special learning benefits to young people of working with contemporary art and the gallery space. Funded by the DCMS and DfES.
